Insights + Strategy
An eye on Japan present and future
I work with some of the world’s foremost trend forecasters and analysts to give their clients—such as Nike, LVMH, and Starbucks—a strategic head start in responding to emerging currents in Japan and the wider APAC region.
For agencies including WGSN and The Future Laboratory, I track trends across a diversity of consumer segments, with the qualitative research elements of this work informed by my anthropological training at a highly ranked Japanese university.
Projects take the form of bespoke advisory for individual clients or, alternatively, editorial content published on an agency’s own platform. Across both approaches, my on-the-ground experience ensures authenticity while perceptive analysis engenders actionable insights.
Since 2014 I have been the sole Japan-based contributor to WGSN, responsible for all Tokyo/Japan-focused content. Editorial reports created for WGSN have explored how Japan’s solo consumers are reshaping markets in their own solitary image; the ubiquitous convenience store as community hub; how brands can engage with Japan’s values-driven yet conflict-averse Gen Z; and much more.
