‘Okinawa’: Takuma Nakahira in a different light (The Japan Times)
A look at the work Provoke magazine-affiliated photographer Takuma Nakahira created in Okinawa towards the end of his life, and the intriguing sequence of events that led him there. Nakahira was central to the development in 1960s Japan of the abrasive ’are-bure-boke’ aesthetic which remains influential today. Both his life and artistic practice were irrevocably changed in the ’70s, when acute alcohol poisoning caused Nakahira permanent and severe damage to his faculty for memory and speech. In subsequently attempting to piece himself back together, Nakahira became a self-described “human camera”.
