Profile of third-generation senshoku (indigo dyeing and kasuri weaving) artisan Okikazu Maeshiro, for the debut issue of Living Okinawa, the in-house lifestyle magazine of luxury resort hotel Halekulani Okinawa.
Maeshiro, based in Okinawa’s indigo heartland of Motobu facing the East China Sea, has had to overcome significant personal hurdles in order to continue his family’s legacy of senshoku innovation. In fabric creations of the deepest blue, he reverently “remixes” the traditional motifs of Okinawan kasuri to express his love for local landscapes, surf culture, and roots reggae music.
